Katie and Her Princesses

Katie was found as a stray with Samm, the Standard Poodle in rural Alabama by a lineman. We don’t know Katie’s breed, but she is either a Standard Poodle or a Doodle. I sent her DNA test yesterday. There were also two Shi Tzus with them, but only one was able to be caught. That is Hazel who is going to her forever home soon. Katie and Samm spent a couple weeks at a vet’s office while we prepared their homes up here. During that time Katie went into heat. While the staff did notice and separate them, I guess it was too late.

Katie and Samm arrived on Nov. 29th. Samm went to Pat’s foster home and Katie came to what is known as “The Camp”. I call it my home. She was here to see if she is going to fit into the Marchek household and also to see if this miracle, of an early breeding, might have happened. As the weeks went by her underside was showing that it was getting ready, but I really didn’t think she was any bigger. She started getting more food, cottage cheese, coconut oil, pollack oil, you name it. Everything an expectant mom would need. We calculated that her due date might be Jan. 27th.

On Jan. 24th she was out playing with our pups that were born last May and having a great time. She ate two cups of food at 10:30. At 1:30 I went to let everyone out of their crates, and there was a pup in the crate. Unfortunately, it had passed. We went right to the vet and they saw at least three more pups, so we rushed home to have them. Still very sad about the one that was lost. No telling what might have happened. She had no signs of labor. We spent the day together waiting for these special pups, but nothing happened. At 8:30 we went to the emergency vet. They gave three doses of Oxytocin, but nothing. Katie was going to surgery for a c-section. I was going to the waiting room for three hours.

At 10:50pm the nurse came out and said that we had four girls! Three black and one brown. The pup that had passed that morning was also a girl and black. Katie recovered and the pups were tended to. At 2am we headed home. It was 3:30 before I got to bed and then up at 5:30, 7:30 and then took a cat nap until 10. Such a special day. The pups were doing great and had photos and videos taken.

Day 2 – Our runt is not doing well. She did not get enough nursing overnight. With that said, now she will get attention every two hours round the clock. I rushed her to the vet at 7:45am and they gave her fluids, while I went to Wal-Mart to get the ingredients for the formula. Please never use canned formula. I have always used Leerburg’s recipe and it makes all the difference in these little lives. Goats milk, organic yogurt, a farmer’s egg and a little Karo syrup. So much better than chemicals. As of the time I am typing this she has had two tube feedings and is looking better. Hopefully we can get her strong enough to nurse soon, but will watch her like a hawk and supplement if needed.

2pm-Our smallest Princess has had three supplemental feedings and nursed for a long time. Best news ever! She is scooting around. Whew, let’s hope we are out of the woods. She is still the smallest, so will need me to be with her every two hours at her feedings. They are so worth it.

Day 3– After getting up every two hours through the night to tube feed our runt, the day has been quite quiet in the nursery. Eating and sleeping has been the order of the day. In 24 hours the black pups went from 10.6 oz to 12.2 oz. and 10.4 oz to 11.7 oz. The brown pup went from 9.5 oz to 11.3 oz. She is not the best eater. Our runt went from 6.8 oz to 8.3 oz. I guess it paid to wake up every two hours. They are growing up! It is so sweet to watch them throughout the day. So I have made some choices on names. Of course they are Princesses, so the brown one is Alexandra. Named after my father, Alexander, who passed away just 47 hours, to the minute, from when they were born. Our runt is now Grace, or Gracie to her mom. It is by the grace of God that she is still with us after her rough start. I am thinking Caroline is in there somewhere, just have to figure out how to tell the two black ones apart.

Days 4, 5 & 6

Over the weekend the pups ate and grew. All are over one pound, except for our runt, Gracie. She was a bit touch and no, not gaining weight one night, but has not steadily gained. This baby stuff makes one nervous. So, they all now have names. Alexandra is brown. She is so pretty and even has red highlights. Not sure how I will let her go. Just not thinking about that right now. I might just have to keep them all. Grace is our little runt, who I guess was in her sack like a pretzel, so the vet named her pretzel. Caroline was given a locket by her father that she wears at all times. You will see he has a matching one, but his is much bigger than hers. Charlotte is our all black pup, but both her and Caroline have white hairs on the bottom of their feet. So it was a nice weekend. Katie is feeling great, and maybe a little too great. No running for her, but try to tell her that.

They now have a baby monitor on them and as I type this I can watch them nurse. It is the best thing ever. Also, the princess’s palace got a front porch, as you will see. Katie doesn’t seem to like it, but maybe she will as time goes on. Enjoy!

Days 7-13 (I guess that is week 2)

Katie and her princesses and doing wonderfully. Although their milestones are exciting, you hate to see them grow up. Right now they can’t hear or see, but they have started making noises. They sound like little birds. For two weeks the birthing suite has been quiet and now all of the sudden their are noises. It brightens my day. Caroline, Alex, and Charlotte are all two pounds. Little Gracie is one pound and five ounces. She grows every day. Just at a slower pace. They are so precious to hold and I can’t get over my love for their wavy hair. Katie has magnificent hair. We are still waiting for her DNA test, but I met two Standards at the groomer yesterday. One had really tight spiral curls, but the groomer said the other had a totally different haircoat. Kate has large ringlets. God is good. He has blessed me with the most wonderful gift in them. I could not be more thankful. Enjoy their photos and videos.

Days 14 & 15

The girls just keep getting better and better, and bigger and bigger. Their eyes are opening, but they can’t see much. Just slits right now and things are blurry. They are starting to look like real puppies and I miss their babyness already. I have to spend all the time I can with them. These photos and videos were taken on their two week birthday and the day after. By the way, Katie chewed the wire on the baby monitor, so no more puppy tv.

Days 16-21

It has been five days and our Princess have changed quite a bit. They are getting more vocal and we hear a bit of barking and odd sounds that are like wild animals in their suite. They play in bit with each other in that they try to bite each other. They also bite their legs. Their eyes are open. Not sure about their ears, but they should be, so I keep talking to them like I always have. Their nails are long and Charlotte got hers trimmed last night. A few a day and the job will get done. They are filling out more and looking more like dogs. They wobble around a bit.

Big development: They were getting out of the pool. I thought for a couple days that Kate was taking them out and then realized they were getting to her out on her porch. Yesterday, out with the pool and a board went in front of the door, so Kate can get in, but for the time being the pups can’t get out. They do hang by the door, so are very smart and know mom is on the other side, but needs her alone time. I bet they smell her. Things us humans don’t think about.

So today they are three weeks. Happy Birthday Girls! What a joy they are. Enjoy!
